LOVE/HATE: Bigger Picture fans react to "Dr Strangelove" by Stanley Kubrick

"I love Dr. Strangelove" says Julie B.

At the end of this film I didn’t quite know what to think... Then, after careful reflection, I found this film to be very interesting and above all very funny!

Dr. Strangelove is an exceptional character. With his arm spasms which force him to raise his hand in a Nazi salute, and with his very pronounced German accent, Dr. Strangelove is hilarious. In one of the last scenes he appears as a real psychopath! When we look at him we are completely flabbergasted! He’s a major mental patient, a mad man! And when he starts to explain his plans to “save” mankind, we become aware that he’s totally crazy! The film is a comedy, but in a disturbing way, mostly because of this character.

Another good thing in this film: the satirical aspect. In fact, the director, Stanley Kubrick, denounces the incredible incompetence of politicians. His purpose is to show that politicians are totally useless: they just talk about problems - in this case nuclear bombs - for a very long time but they are not able to find any solution. I’m sure that it’s impossible to be efficient staying in an underground room…

Last point: the enormous talent of Peter Sellers. In fact, he pla

ys three roles: the President of the United-States, the English officer, and Dr. Strangelove lui-même. It’s incredible to see the way he plays these three roles perfectly!

"I hate Dr. Strangelove" says Antoine R.

Stanley Kubrick wanted to denounce one thing in particular: incompetent politicians. But, in real life, without politicians there would indeed have been a war. Kubrick wanted the actors who played the politicians to act totally crazy; for me, they are not very convincing in the roles of the most important men in the world. I think politicians weren’t crazy; without them, we would not be here today...

Sure, this film is a masterpiece, but I found the dialogues never-ending (for example the red phone conversation). There is a lack of action. Also, the end, I must say, is very difficult to understand...

Finally, I find the special effects in this movie really pathetic, even for an old movie. It is probably due to its ridiculous budget ($1.8 million).
