3:26pm : The US Airways' 1539 flight took off from La Guardia airport (NY), with 155 passengers on board.
Several minutes after taking off it was hit by birds that blocked the reactors.
Pilot Chesley Sullenberg to air control : "This is Cactus 1539. We've hit birds and are losing thrust in both engines. We're turning back toward La Guardia."
La Guardia : "Cactus 1539, do you want to try to land on the runway?"
Cactus 1539 : "We're unable to... we may end up in the Hudson!"
LaGuardia : "Alright Cactus 1539..."
Cactus 1539 : "We're unable."
La Guardia : "Okay, what do you need to land?"
Pilot: "We can't do it. We're gonna be in the Hudson"
LaGuardia : "I'm sorry, say again Cactus."
But the pilot won't repeat... The next instant he managed to land on the Hudson. The 155 passengers were all saved, with just 78 injured.
I think it is absolutely amazing ! It must be so incredible to walk alongside the river in the huge NY City , and to see a plane come down and crash in the water. Besides, the pilot has become a hero !
