The 20th January 2009, Barack Obama, who made history by becoming the first black president of the United States, was sworn in as the 44th president of the US by Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts in front of the Capitol in Washington.
The event has been a great and a very meaningful one in a country where Blacks used to be considered as cattle for centuries. It's only in 1964 and 1965 that the laws which banned all forms of discrimination were voted : the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act.
Forty-four years later, a Black man became President. But we can ask: did Barack Obama not benifit from positive discrimination? I think even if he has the skills to be president, this popularity comes from the colour of his skin. Would we have the same passion for a white president?
