A picture that changed the world...
Her clothes have been burned off and her skin is peeling away because of napalm, a chemical massively used during the Vietnam war. She is running down the road, away from the danger, screaming in her mother tongue: “I want water, I’m hot, I am way too hot !” Her village has been bombed by the American Army...
The girl was nine when she was immortalized by Nick Ut on June 8th 1972.
The photographer took her with his car to the nearest hospital, where she was cared for.
Nick knew that he had an exceptional picture and it was published around the world. He received the Pulitzer Prize.
This photo shocked the American people into opposing the war in Vietnam. It helped change the world for the better.
Kim Phuc, the little girl in the picture, became a symbol of the victims of war. She was appointed a UNESCO ambassador for Peace in 1997. She has remained in contact with Nick, the man who saved her life.
When I saw it for the first time, it was during a history lesson about the Vietnam War. I was terribly shocked by this photo of children running and screaming, especially as the soldiers seem indifferent to the plight of the children…
This photo shows the horror of this war, and condemns America…

"Each day I get a little more irritated to see these young people wander about, without any ambition, and leading the world to its loss. When I was young, I worked hard, very hard and, as you can see, life has taken its toll on me. But you do not have to look at me with that pitying air, I don’t need it. I have a few good years left in me yet! I can still make my mark on this world, serve as an example and contribute, across the generations, to a modern and peaceful world…"
