My favourite European by Camille Laporte

Simone Veil is a French politician born in 1927. She has courageously defended women’s rights and worked for European unity and peace.

She is:

A survivor: as a Jew, she was deported to Auschwitz in ‘44.

Intelligent: she was a highly gifted student.

Independent-minded: she is not afraid to disagree with her own political party, such as in 1990 when she opposed the creation of computerized police files.

Courageous: she defended her bill on decriminalizing abortion (1975) though the majority of the members of Parliament were opposed to it.

An activist: she has held various important posts (Minister of Health, then President of the European Parliament, then Minister for Social Affairs, Health and Cities, etc.)

A humanist: she was a member of the High Council on Integration. She was also in charge of the debate on diversity.

Modest: despite all her State missions, she is willing to help with the most humble causes.

Attentive: throughout her career, she has always fought to improve people’s lives.

Wise: she is a member of the French Academy.

Honest: she never hides her opinions.

Well-loved: she is the most popular woman in France.
