Europa was a Phoenician princess, the daughter of the king of Tyre. One day, as she was walking on the beach with her friends, Zeus saw her… He was so attracted by her beauty that he transformed himself into a bull and he came near the girl to charm her. Europa was terribly afraid, but she fell under the bull’s spell. She climbed on its back and Zeus galloped into the sea despite Europa’s cries of fear. They arrived in Crete and there Europa fell in love with her bull... Europa then bore Zeus three sons: Minos, Sarpedon and Rhadamante.
As our continent bears her name, Europa is one of the symbols of Europe. But, Europa was a Lebanese princess, which would make her a woman of the Middle East. Maybe we should enlarge the EU’s borders even more so that Europa can become a more logical embodiment of our continent?!
