On September 24th I interviewed Veronika and Thomas, our two Czech friends who are both in première S. Here are some highlights:
Why have you come to Aurillac?
We came here in order to improve our French, gain new experience, meet nice people, experience the French way of life and enjoy ourselves! We want to see how things are in different countries...
Tell us more about The Czech Republic... Since when has it been independent, who is Vaclav Havel, what is its political system today?
Czechoslovakia became independent from the Soviet Union in 1989. Then, in 1993 our country split in two peacefully; Czechoslovakia became the Czech Republic and Slovakia, two independent countries. Václav Havel was a dissident who fought communism bravely by his pacifism, his belief in liberty and democracy which made him make so many personal sacrifices. After the 'Velvet revolution' he became Czechoslovakian president in 1989 and the first Czech president in 1993. Today, the government is right-wing, but it changes almost every season for there are two main political parties: a left-wing one (the Socialists) and a right-wing one; they are equally (un)popular.
Could you compare Czech and French schools for us?
Well, I guess I could say that Czech schools are bit more “free”... Pupils there have a greater sense of personal responsibility; they can do whatever they want to, as long as their results are good. Of course, you can't disturb lessons, but it’s up to you what you write down and stuff. Another difference, is that high school lasts four years, and then we have to pass the final exam which is basically the same as your 'Bac'.
