Is there greater pleasure than sitting in one’s garden on a sunny afternoon, with a porcelain cup of piping hot Earl Grey and a heap of Mc Vitie’s buiscuits, with an opus by my darling Jane Austen for company? Not only are the stories fabulous, but so is the atmosphere. I love the vividness of the writing.
“It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.” This is the opening line of Pride and Prejudice, my favourite Jane Austen book.
I found the 1995 BBC TV series based on the book, with Colin Firth and the lovely Jennifer Ehle, delightful. Of course I watched the six episodes in English! You can hear every sound (birds, old wooden doors cracking and so on) and English actors are so very good. It would be ridiculous to listen to a version dubbed in French. You can find the episodes on the BBC’s Web site.

There is a film version of the story with Keira Knightley but I think the BBC series is better!
If you think you’re not able to read her masterpiece just yet, a good way to start is by reading Lady Susan. It’s the story of a young widow, without a penny, who is smart and pretty. She lives in her brother-in-law’s home. Is she a flirt or someone willing to do anything to make a good marriage? The young Reginald risks paying dearly to find out…
You should also see Becoming Jane, a Julian Jarrold film with the excellent James McAvoy and Miss Anne Hathaway…
